John Cogan

John Cogan captures the beauty of creation on canvas, painting the landscapes and wildlife of the American West in a unique style that he has become known for throughout New Mexico and the Southwest. The Grand Canyon has been one of John's favorite subjects and he has painted it hundreds of times in all seasons and weather over the last thirty years.  He works in acrylic, focusing on color and the effects of light.

John earned his Bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University, and a MA and Ph.D. in experimental physics from Rice University.  He worked briefly in the corporate world, but in 1982 he left his job to pursue painting full time. John has won numerous awards in the Grand Canyon Association's “Plein Air on the Rim” invitational and Zion National Park's "In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran" plein air invitational.  In addition to Grand Canyon Association and Zion National Park’s permanent collections, John has paintings in many other notable collections including San Juan College and Citizens Bank in Farmington, New Mexico, Conoco Phillips, McGraw Hill, and Raymond James Financial as well as other corporate and private collections. His paintings are also in the collections of the Sultan of Oman for which he was commissioned to paint 25 landscapes.
